Biography
Blessed with “a lustrous voice, full of expression” (The Guardian), British mezzo-soprano Angela Simkin is a unique and exciting artist with a burnished tone and arresting vocal quality. Having already established herself as an “outstanding” Handelien she is particularly praised for her coloratura roles.
Angela was a Young Artist on the Royal Opera House’s prestigious Jette Parker Young Artist Programme from 2016-2018. For the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, her roles have included Mlle Dangeville Adriana Lecouvreur, the title role in Handel’s Oreste, Zweite Dame Die Zauberflöte, Annina Der Rosenkavalier (conducted by Andris Nelsons), Tebaldo Don Carlo (conducted by Bertrand de Billy) Flora Bervoix La traviata, Mercédès Carmen, Flosshilde Das Rheingold / Götterdämmerung (conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano), and The Herdswoman, Jenufa.
She joined the Ensemble of the Landestheater Linz in 2022, where some of her notable recent and upcoming roles include Rosina il barbiere di Siviglia, Orlovsky Die Fledermaus, the title role in Handel’s Rinaldo, Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro (conducted by Markus Poschner), Lola Cavelleria Rusticana, Edwige Guillelmo Tell and Suzuki Madama Butterfly.
Angela made her debut with Grange Festival Opera in 2021 where she sang Meg Page Falstaff and was immediately reinvited to sing Hermia A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2021and Phoebe Meryll (Yeoman of the Guard) in 2022. In addition to her commitments in Linz, she looks forward to her house debut at Bregenz Festival as Flora La traviata.
In concert, Angela has enjoyed performing Siegrune Die Walküre with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Vladamir Jurowski), Lucilla Il vologeso for The Mozartists, the Messiah for The Mozartists, London Handel Orcherstra and Raymond Gubbay at London’s Royal Festival Hall, Haydn’s Nelson Mass at Snape Maltings, and most recently, as gala soloist for Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra's New Year's Day concert at the Tonhalle, Düsseldorf.
Other notable highlights of recent seasons include Second Witness Lessons in Love and Violence at the Stars of the White Nights Festival St Petersburg, Mercédès Carmen for Welsh National Opera, The Angel in Rubensteins’s The Demon for Chelsea Opera Group, Meg Page Falstaff for The Grange Festival, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 at London’s Cadogan Hall, and recital performances of Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder and Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’Été with Lucy Colquhoun at the Crush Room of the Royal Opera House and at St John’s Smith Square.
